Hi Friends!

Let’s chat about easy canned food recipes, shall we? Canned foods are often over-looked or get a reputation for not being as good as fresh or frozen food, but in reality they are nutrient-dense and budget-friendly, making them a great option for most people.

How To Use This Guide

This post is meant to be a resource for busy families looking for easy pantry meals that can be cooked on a budget. Be sure to bookmark this blog post so you can easily refer back to it.

Below you will find some general information about the nutritional benefits of a variety of canned foods, as well as lots of recipe suggestions.

The recipes are grouped by type of canned food to make it easier to find what you’re looking for!

Benefits of canned food

While the nutrients in canned fruits and vegetables are locked in at peak freshness soon after they are harvested, fresh fruits and veggies are losing nutrients as they travel across the country and while sitting in the grocery store.

A mix of canned, fresh, frozen and dried foods can help you get all the nutrients you need and canned foods are a great option if, for example, certain produce isn’t in season near you.

Stocking up on canned fruits and vegetables and canned protein sources like tuna and beans is a great way to fill your pantry to help ensure you always have these healthy staples on hand to make quick canned food recipes for healthy weeknight meals!

How To Choose Healthy Canned Foods

When choosing which canned foods to buy, here are a few tips:

  • Look for low-sodium or no salt added varieties so that you can control sodium levels.
  • If you can’t find low-sodium options, rinse your canned foods with water before using them in a recipe to help remove some of the added salt.
  • Look for BPA-free cans so that those chemicals are getting into your food.
  • Aim for variety. There are tons of canned food options out there. Challenge yourself to try different types of vegetables, beans etc that you haven’t had before as well as mixing up your intake of fresh, frozen and canned fruits, vegetables and protein.

Common Mistakes When Cooking with Canned Foods

A few things to keep in mind when cooking with canned foods:

  • Consider added sodium. Either choose low-sodium, rinse before using or adjust additional added salt to take the sodium in canned foods into consideration.
  • Don’t skip the seasoning! Some people complain or think they don’t like canned foods because they are lacking flavor but a lot of canned foods do not come pre-seasoned. So make sure to add your favorite spices and seasonings to help your food taste its best!
  • Don’t overcook – Unlike fresh vegetables and protein, canned foods are already cooked. They don’t need long cooking times like some fresh food does. So don’t over-do it on the cooking or you’ll end up with mush. If mixing fresh and canned ingredients, consider adding canned near the end!
Easy Pantry and Freezer Meals

Easy Pantry Meals

Canned foods are great for making quick meals. Here are some of my favorite easy Pantry and Freezer Meals. You can use a variety of canned foods to make:

  • Budget-Friendly Meals – Canned foods are typically fairly inexpensive and they can be a great way to make nutrient-dense meals as grocery costs continue to rise. Especially in cooked dishes like soups, casseroles etc, canned foods are hard to distinguish from fresh and often contain more nutrients.
  • Last-Minute Dinners – Despite ours best planning, sometimes we find ourselves needing a quick dinner with not much left in the fridge. Keeping a well-stocked pantry with a variety of canned foods can help ensure we can still throw together a healthy dinner quickly.
  • Emergency or Pantry cooking – In the event of an emergency like a hurricane, power outage, etc, canned foods can sometimes be the only source of available food. Having a stock of canned goods can help you continue to feed your family even when disaster strikes.

Hi friends!

I’m excited to share this updated recipe for Chicken Pesto Pasta with you today! It is so easy and flavorful. Truly a dish the whole family can enjoy and I’ve been making it on repeat lately.

Why You’ll Love This Chicken Pesto Pasta

Just a few things to love about this recipe:

  • It’s quick enough for a weeknight dinner but can also be fancy enough for date night.
  • It’s easy to customize – you could easily add more veggies! Try dropping some chopped broccoli or green beans in with the pasta for the last few minutes of cooking.
  • You can add a seasonal spin – Try adding some fresh sweet corn in the summer or some roasted squash in the Fall.
  • High protein – You’ll get protein from the chicken and you can add even more protein by choosing a higher protein pasta. My kids love Barilla Plus!

Chicken Pesto Pasta Ingredients

For this recipe you’ll need:

  • Chicken – I use boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • Marinade ingredients – oil, red wine vinegar, garlic powder, paprika and salt
  • Tomatoes – I use grape or cherry tomatoes cut in half
  • Garlic and butter – for flavor
  • Heavy cream – to thicken the sauce slightly
  • Pesto – feel free to use homemade or store-bought
  • Parmesan – freshly grated!
  • Pasta – pick your favorite shape!

How To Make Chicken Pesto Pasta

Making this recipe requires just a few simple steps:

  • Marinate the chicken.
  • Pan sear the chicken until cooked through and set aside.
  • Cook the pasta according to package directions.
  • In the same pan you cooked the chicken in, saute tomatoes, butter and garlic.
  • Add the cream, pesto and parmesan.
  • Stir in the cooked pasta and add chicken before serving!

Pesto Pasta Protein Options

This recipe works great with any type of chicken. Feel free to skip pan-searing the chicken and just mix in some leftover baked or grilled chicken, or use shredded rotisserie chicken to make it come together even more quickly!

If you don’t want chicken, you could sub shrimp in the same marinade!

Chicken Pesto Pasta Variations

Here are some easy variations to consider:

Vegetable variations

Feel free to change up the vegetables in this recipe. You could add asparagus, broccoli, green beans, zucchini or even a couple of handfuls of baby spinach!

Gluten-Free Chicken Pesto Pasta

To make this recipe gluten-free, just sub in a gluten-free pasta of your choice. I like Jovial or Tinkayada. The rest of the recipe is naturally gluten-free. Be sure to double-check the pasta if needed.

Creamy Chicken Pesto Pasta

To make this recipe even creamier, try melting in a few ounces of cream cheese when you add the heavy cream and pesto!

Seasonal variations

Try adding peas or asparagus in the spring, roasted squash in the fall and fresh corn, zucchini and/or green beans in the spring.

healthy chicken pesto pasta

Healthy Chicken Pesto Pasta

This recipe is already fairly healthy. To add more nutrients, try:

  • Swapping in whole wheat pasta or a higher protein pasta option
  • Add more veggies. You can easily add several more servings of vegetables to this recipe!
  • Cut back on the pesto a little bit and add some fresh basil and cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes for extra flavor.

Easy Chicken Pesto Pasta

To make this dish as easy as possible, grab a rotisserie chicken and skip cooking the chicken. And grab some store-bought pesto vs making your own!

What To Serve with Chicken Pesto Pasta

This pasta dish could be a complete meal on its own but if you’re looking for something to serve with it, try:

Chicken Pesto Pasta vs Caprese Pasta

Caprese Pasta Salad typically has a base of noodles and includes tomatoes and fresh basil as well, but it often comes with a balsamic dressing and the addition of fresh mozzarella. Here’s a recipe for Caprese Pasta Salad. Chicken pesto pasta has a pesto-based dressing/sauce. You could definitely add fresh mozzarella pearls to the chicken pesto pasta!

Meal Prep Chicken Pesto Pasta and Storage

Can chicken pesto pasta be made ahead of time? Yes! It holds up well and can be stored in the fridge. Just reheat in the microwave when ready to eat.

You can even enjoy this pasta dish warm or cold which makes it a great option to pack for lunch.

Hi friends!
Popping in to share this quick and easy Shrimp Cobb Salad for an easy lunch or dinner. Shrimp is one of my favorite quick-cooking proteins and cobb salads are perfect for packing in a ton of healthy ingredients. If you don’t like shrimp, try my Steak Cobb Salad.

Why You’ll Love This Healthy Shrimp Cobb Salad

This shrimp cobb salad is easy to love for a lot of reasons:

  • Fully customizable. Feel free to swap out any toppings you don’t like or add your own.
  • Great for meal prep – All the components of this salad can be prepped ahead of time which makes it quick and easy to assemble at meal time.
  • Has protein and healthy fats – The shrimp is an easy quick-cooking protein and the avocado and salad dressing, especially homemade, both add healthy fats to help boost satiety.
  • It’s heart-healthy, packed with lean protein and veggies and healthy fats.

Shrimp Cobb Salad Ingredients

To make this salad, you’ll need:

  • Shrimp – Feel free to use any size you prefer
  • Bacon – I prefer to cook the bacon myself and chop it up but you could use bacon bits if you want
  • Hard boiled eggs – make your own or buy them pre-bought. Here’s how to make hard-boiled eggs in the instant pot.
  • Red onion – feel free to swap green, white, yellow onions etc for a milder flavor
  • Tomato – grape or cherry tomatoes halved or quartered work well
  • Avocado
  • Feta – I use crumbled feta. It does have a stronger flavor so feel free to swap with a different cheese if you prefer
  • Dressing – I like a lighter vinaigrette like the one I share below but you could use something creamy like ranch, etc if you want!
healthy shrimp cobb salad with avocado and hard boiled egg

How To Cook Shrimp

You can choose to prepare the shrimp for this salad whatever way you prefer. A few ideas:

  • Sauteed – This is the method I typically use. Just heat some butter or oil in a skillet, add shrimp and seasonings and cook for 4-6 minutes, until shrimp are pink.
  • Grilled – If you have the grill fired up, thread the shrimp onto a few skewers, season and grill 2-3 minutes per side.
  • Baked – You can also bake them in the oven. Here’s a recipe for Oven-Baked Shrimp.

How To Make An Easy Shrimp Cobb Salad

To make this salad:

  • Cook the bacon, eggs and shrimp via your preferred method. To save time, you can grab pre-cooked shrimp and/or hard-boiled eggs.
  • Start with a bed of lettuce. Feel free to grab a bag of packaged salad greens to save time!
  • Add toppings. In a traditional cobb salad, ingredients are grouped into sections or rows on top of the lettuce but you can skip this step and combine everything mixed together on top.
  • Top with dressing – homemade or store-bought.

The dressing options for this salad are endless. I typically use a maple mustard vinaigrette to keep it light but a lemon garlic dressing would also be great. If you want something a little more robust, try ranch or blue cheese to add some creaminess to the salad.

sauteed shrimp cobb salad

Cobb Salad Protein

The great thing about the cobb salad is that it pairs well with almost any protein. If you don’t like shrimp, try:

  • Steak – I’ve used leftover flank steak before!
  • Chicken – This is a great way to transform leftover grilled chicken.
  • Tofu – My Honey Garlic Air Fryer Tofu would work well on this salad. If you want to keep it vegetarian, you could swap the bacon for some beans
  • Salmon – If you don’t want shrimp but still want seafood, try adding my Air Fryer Salmon Bites.

Shrimp Cobb Salad Meal Prep & Storage

This salad is PERFECT for meal prep! Prep all of the components ahead of time and store separately until you’re ready to serve. Shrimp can be cooked and stored in a glass container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Same with bacon and hard-boiled eggs. They can be sliced/chopped ahead of time as well.

Save the avocado to slice right before serving so it doesn’t turn brown but the tomatoes and onions could be cut ahead of time and stored as well.

To prep your lettuce ahead of time, chop, wash and spin dry and store in a bag with a paper towel to absorb excess moisture and squeeze all the air out before sealing the bag.

If you choose to make homemade dressing, that can be prepped and stored in a mason jar in the fridge. Just give it a good shake before serving.

Shrimp Cobb Salad Tips and Tricks

A few tips and tricks:

  • Don’t overcook your shrimp! When shrimp take on a pinkish color and form a “C” shape, they’re done. If they curl up tight into an “O” shape, they are overcooked.
  • To keep your lettuce crisp, chop, wash and spin dry, then store in a bag. Add a paper towel to soak up the excess moisture and squeeze the air out before sealing the bag shut.
  • Vary the veggies – Salad is a great way to utilize veggies that are in season. Try nice ripe tomatoes in the summer. In the Fall, add some roasted squash!

Hi friends!

We are continuing our “Best of” series by talking about macaroni and cheese. So far, we’ve covered snacks from certain stores like:

We’ve also talked about specific types of snacks like:

So be sure to catch up on those posts if you missed them!

Best mac and cheese in a box

When it comes to boxed mac and cheese, my biggest concern is sodium. Some brands, especially the deluxe versions, have 1,000+ mg of sodium per serving, which is way more than necessary. While I don’t recommend packaged mac and cheese as an everyday food, it’s certainly something my kids have for dinner occasionally.

When I’m picking out which brand to buy, I look for the lowest sodium per serving that I can find, and I’d also love for there to be a decent amount of both protein and fiber.

The problem is that some of the brands that are higher in both protein and fiber are not always a hit with my kids.

Why You’ll Love This List of the Best Mac & Cheese

  • I compare the nutritional value of several brands
  • All of these choices are affordable and available
  • Kid-tested – I let my kids taste all of these and provide their honest review
  • I’m a Registered Dietitian and I’m telling you it’s ok to serve boxed mac and cheese as a busy mom

Mac and Cheese Kids’ Review

So after looking at a lot of mac and cheese boxes, I decided to do a taste test with my kids (Their ages at the time of the taste test: 7, 5 & 3) to see which ones they would actually eat.

I chose two classics: Kraft and Annie’s Original. I also chose two that were higher in fiber & protein: Banza and Goodle. Then I threw in an Annie’s Vegan option and Annie’s 25% reduced-sodium. Here’s the video of their taste test:

Best Healthy Boxed Mac and Cheese

Let’s look at these six options I chose for the taste test in a little more detail. Note- I’m sure there are other great options. I tried to stick to brands that were widely available in the two grocery stores by my house, not specialty stores like Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s etc.

What is the best boxed mac and cheese brand?

Of course this will vary based on personal preference. To choose which is best for your family, pick a few things that are most important to you and focus on those – protein? fiber? sodium level? taste?

Which boxed mac and cheese is best for kids?

As a Registered Dietitian, these are my top picks to serve to my kids:

  • Annie’s
  • Banza
  • Goodles

I found Annie’s to be the lowest in sodium and my kids like it. Both Banza and Goodles are higher in protein and fiber, but also higher in sodium…and my kids didn’t like them.

Since this original post, they have also launched Annie’s Super! Mac, which is higher and protein and fiber. It’s also a bit higher in sodium but my kids love it.

Does boxed mac and cheese go bad?

Since it’s a shelf-stable food, it will generally last for several years. Remember that the expiration date is speaking to the quality, not the safety so in general it’s fine to eat it 1-2 years past the expiration date. It’s likely the packets of cheese that will go bad before the noodles.

How to make boxed mac and cheese better?

What’s the healthiest boxed mac and cheese option?

  • Choose one with 500mg sodium or less per serving
  • Try not using the whole packet of cheese
  • Mix in Greek yogurt instead of butter for extra protein
  • Look for whole wheat, whole grain or alternative noodle options for more fiber

Boxed mac and cheese food prep ideas:

Mac and cheese reheats well so it can be a great option for food prep. Try prepping a batch and using during the week:

  • Reheat and mix in some leftover taco meat or chicken
  • Stir in a bag of steamed vegetables and serve as a side dish with a lean protein. Broccoli and peas are often a great choice!
  • Turn into Macaroni and Cheese Mufffins
  • Food prep some pulled pork as well and pair with a salad for a quick and easy dinner!

Boxed Mac and Cheese Hacks

  • To make it creamier, try using Greek yogurt. You can either add it right along with the milk instead of butter, or you can skip the milk and try just adding Greek yogurt. Adding less milk also makes it thicker and creamier.
  • To turn it into a full meal, try adding leftover cooked chicken or some chicken sausage. You can also add cooked vegetables. One easy hack is to add some frozen peas to the water for the last few minutes of cooking the noodles.
  • For a different cheese flavor, try using half the packet of cheese and mixing in some shredded cheese of your own.
  • Try putting your own spin on it! Want pizza mac? Grab some white cheddar boxed mac, put it in a pan, top with a little pizza sauce, pepperoni and shredded mozzarella and broil for a couple minutes.
  • Add some spices. Try mixing in a little garlic powder or paprika when you add the cheese.

How To Make Mac & Cheese From A Box

If you’ve never made boxed mac and cheese, you can follow the directions on the box, which involves boiling water, adding the noodles and then draining them before adding cheese milk and sometimes butter.

Recently I’ve started making it a different way that involves adding the cheese, butter and noodles right at the very beginning before you even boil the water and I think it turns out much better. You can find directions for the TikTok Mac and Cheese Recipe here.

Boxed Mac and Cheese in the Microwave

While I haven’t tried this myself beyond eating the Kraft microwavable cups in college, here are directions for how to make boxed mac and cheese in the microwave. The microwave gets the water hot enough to boil so it can cook the noodles, you just have to remember to stir frequently and there won’t be water to drain out at the end.

boxed mac and cheese in the instant pot

Instant Pot Box Mac and Cheese

If you have an instant pot, you can also use that to cook a box of mac and cheese. Add one cup water to the instant pot with butter and pasta. Cook 4 minutes, quick release and stir in cheese and milk. Here’s a whole post about how to cook instant pot box mac and cheese.

Can you make boxed mac and cheese without milk?

If you don’t have or don’t want to use milk, try saving 1/4 cup of the water you cooked the pasta in. You can also mix in cream, plain Greek yogurt or even cream cheese or sour cream instead of milk.

How to make box mac and cheese with ground beef?

This is a great way to use up leftover ground beef or turkey, taco meat, etc. Just cook the beef and stir it into the macaroni once you’ve mixed in the milk and cheese. Try adding a little taco seasoning for taco mac or just salt and pepper for some cheesy hamburger mac.

Boxed Mac and Cheese FAQs

Are there gluten-free mac and cheese brands?

Yes! Over the past few years, more and more brands have come out with gluten-free noodle options, made from things like brown rice, chickpeas and lentils and this has also increased the number of gluten-free mac and cheese options. Check out this post for some of the best gluten-free mac and cheese.

Which boxed mac and cheese has the most protein?

There are several brands out there with a decent amount of protein. Muscle Mac has 20g per serving. Banza has 16g per serving. Goodles has 14g per serving. And Annie’s SuperMac has 16g per serving.

What’s the best vegan boxed mac and cheese?

I’ve only tried one of the vegan options but there are plenty out there. Here are some of the Best Boxed Vegan Mac and Cheese options.

Can I add vegetables or protein to boxed mac and cheese?

Absolutely – it’s a great vehicle for transforming leftover chicken, steak or other protein into a new meal and an easy way to add vegetables would be to mix in some steamed or roasted vegetables at the end, or drop some frozen vegetables into the water for the last few minutes of cooking the noodles.

You can also mix in pureed vegetables like pumpkin or stir in some Greek yogurt or cottage cheese.

Can you make boxed mac and cheese with non-dairy milk?

Yes. You can replace cow’s milk with a milk alternative like soy milk, almond milk, etc.

How do I make boxed mac and cheese taste better?

A few ways to amp up the taste of boxed mac and cheese include adding additional seasonings – paprika, cayenne pepper, etc. You can also mix in some freshly grated cheese. Many people say not to skip the butter because it really helps with the flavor and also not to add too much milk.

Are there low-sodium boxed mac and cheese options?

Annie’s has a lower-sodium variety. It comes in a red box.

Which boxed mac and cheese option reheats best?

Most boxed mac and cheese varieties will become less creamy once they have been cooled and are then reheated. Often adding a splash of milk after reheating can help restore some of the creaminess.

Hi friends!

I first shared these Slow Cooker Honey Garlic Chicken Thighs almost 8 years ago and they’re still one of my go-to crockpot meals. When I first made this recipe, it got the seal of approval from hubby and son and then I made it for my parents and my mom asked for the recipe because my dad loved it so much. I passed it on to several friends before I even put it on the blog and continue to share it regularly. My daughter loves it because carrots and sweet potatoes are her favorite.

Why You’ll Love Slow Cooker Honey Garlic Chicken Thighs

  • Budget-friendly because it uses chicken thighs and other pantry staples
  • Freezer-friendly – This recipe freezes well!
  • Perfect for food prep – Prep multiple batches in ziploc bags and freeze some for later.
  • Easy to customize- Feel free to swap the carrots for other vegetables like sweet potatoes.

This recipe is super easy and affordable – no fancy ingredients required!

Need a slow cooker?? I love this basic Crockpot 8qt with auto warm setting. I also have this Instant Electric Round Dutch Oven which is great because you can brown/sear things right in the pot before switching to slow cooking. And finally, if you have an Instant Pot, you can grab a glass lid to turn it into a slow cooker. (aff links)

Can you freeze this honey garlic chicken thighs crockpot recipe?

This has become my go-to recipe to deliver to new moms or friends who have had surgery, have a sick kid etc. You can easily throw everything in a ziploc bag and deliver it and then they can either dump it in the crockpot to make it immediately or stick it in the freezer for later.

Should I use boneless skinless chicken thighs or breasts?

This recipe uses chicken thighs. You could make it with chicken breasts. I encourage you to try it at least once with thighs. They do so well in the slow cooker, never drying out like chicken breasts are sometimes prone to do.

Could I use boneless breast tenders?

I wouldn’t recommend tenders for this recipe. Because they’re cooking for a while in the slow cooker, thinner/smaller cuts like tenders would likely end up overcooked and rubbery.

How To Prep Honey Garlic Chicken Thighs for the slow cooker

If you want to prep this ahead of time, just put all of the ingredients in a Ziploc bag.

From there, you can freeze and when you’re ready to use, thaw the night before and throw in the crockpot before work. Or stick the bag in the fridge overnight, dump it into the crockpot in the morning and turn it on.

Slow Cooker Honey Garlic Chicken Thighs Recipe

5 Stars 4 Stars 3 Stars 2 Stars 1 Star

5 from 2 reviews

This recipe for Slow Cooker Honey Garlic Chicken Thighs is an easy, kid-friendly weeknight dinner. Let the crockpot do all the work and serve with rice and steamed veggies for a balanced meal.

  • Prep Time: 5 minutes
  • Cook Time: 6 hours
  • Total Time: 6 hours 5 minutes
  • Yield: Serves 6

Ingredients

  • 1 large sweet potato, chopped
  • 23 large carrots, peeled and chopped
  • 2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken thighs
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 Tbsp fresh ginger (i use the paste)
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 23 Tbsp honey or maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1 cup chicken broth

Instructions

  1. Chop the sweet potato and carrots to roughly the same size pieces and place in the bottom of the slow cooker.
  2. Add chicken thighs.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together remaining ingredients.
  4. Pour over chicken and cook in a slow cooker on low for about 6 hours.

Pretty simple right? If you aren’t a fan of carrots or sweet potatoes you could probably swap in another veggie, just be aware that some veggies get a bit mushy in the slow cooker. I like carrots and sweet potatoes because they hold their shape well.

Meal Prep Ideas:

  • Serve with steamed broccoli and rice for an easy, balanced meal.
  • Ladle over noodles that were prepped ahead of time.
  • To transform leftovers, chop the chicken and veggies smaller and use to make fried rice.
  • Prep double and freeze half for later.

Honey Garlic Chicken Thighs FAQs

Can you make honey garlic chicken thighs in the instant pot? Can you stack chicken thighs in the instant pot?

Yes! You can easily make this recipe in the Instant pot. Just combine all the ingredients in the Instant pot and cook in manual mode for about 15 minutes. The size, thickness and type of chicken used will determine cooking time but you should be able to shred them easily with a fork.

You can stack chicken thighs 2 high in the instant pot but if you have more than that I would cook in two batches.

Or try this recipe for Instant Pot Honey Ginger Chicken.

What type of chicken thighs should I use for instant pot chicken thighs?

I prefer boneless, skinless chicken thighs. You could try bone-in if you wanted to but I tend to prefer boneless/skinless for slow cooker and instant pot recipes and bone-in chicken with skin when cooking in cast iron on the stove or in the oven.

What setting do you cook chicken on in an Instant pot?

I use manual mode. It allows you to set the timer for the exact number of minutes you want to cook something for!

Can I put raw chicken in the slow cooker?

Yes! Slow cookers are designed to cook meat at a low temperature over a period of several hours. In most cases, chicken will cook in the slow cooker on low heat in 4-6 hours but you can leave it in there longer.

You’ll know it’s done if you check the temperature with a thermometer or when you can shred it easily with a fork.

Do you have to brown chicken before putting in slow cooker?

No, you do not have to brown chicken before slow cooking. You can! Browning is an easy way to add extra flavor but it can be an extra step and if your slow cooker doesn’t come with a browning option it often means dirtying another pan.

While it’s important in some recipes, I don’t find it to be a necessary step in this recipe.

This recipe for Slow Cooker Honey Garlic Chicken Thighs is an easy, kid-friendly weeknight dinner. Let the crockpot do all the work and serve with rice and steamed veggies for a balanced meal.

Is chicken breast or thigh better for slow cooker?

Both work fine. I most often by chicken breasts so I cook with those most frequently and they work just fine. Chicken thighs have darker meat that’s a bit fattier and in many cases this is an asset in slow cooking.

The fat helps keep the chicken moist as it cooks low and slow and for this reason chicken thighs are great for slow cooking.

Is it better to cook chicken on high or low in the slow cooker?

I choose to cook most things in the slow cooker over low heat. Crockpot recipes are designed for cuts of meat the do well when cooked low and slow whereas other cuts of meat do better cooking quickly over high heat like on a grill.

What makes the honey garlic sauce in this chicken recipe?

The sauce is a mix of ginger, garlic, honey, ketchup, soy sauce and chicken broth.

Is this honey garlic chicken thighs recipe super garlicky?

It uses 4 cloves are garlic but you could easily cut back to 2 cloves if you prefer a milder flavor.

This recipe for Slow Cooker Honey Garlic Chicken Thighs is an easy, kid-friendly weeknight dinner. Let the crockpot do all the work and serve with rice and steamed veggies for a balanced meal.

This budget-friendly recipe for honey garlic chicken thighs is sure to be a hit! It’s kid-friendly, affordable, made with simple ingredients and freezes well! Perfect for busy families.

Enjoy!

If you have a picky eater and are looking to expand their world by introducing them to some new foods and flavors, here’s a list of 75 new foods to try!

75 NEW FOODS TO TRY

*Originally published 9/23. Updated 6/25*

Hi friends!

Over the summer I decided it was time to get my kids excited again about trying new healthy foods at home. But not just healthy foods. We started a chart for each of them and wrote down and celebrated everything new that they tried – even things like desserts and types of candy.

The goal was not to get them to try specific foods, it was just to get them excited about trying new things in general and to find some new and exciting ingredients to cook with! Their list included everything from pound cake and candy to fruits and vegetables to multigrain chips. If they hadn’t tried it before and were willing to take a bite, it went on the list!

I also had them record their response – a smiley face for like it, a check mark for just ok, and an x for no thank you.

New Foods To Try With Kids

It was fun to watch their excitement grow as their list grew, and since there are 3 of them, there was often a little friendly competition to see who could try the most things to add to their lists.

When I shared this on Instagram, I had a lot of people interested in a list of new foods for their kids to try. Something they could use as a starting point to get ideas for introducing new foods to their kids. So I made one!

There are no set rules about the best ways to try new foods. Pick a day and try a whole bunch at once, or set a goal to try one new ingredient a week!

How Can I Introduce My Kids To New Foods

One of the best ways to get kids interested in trying new foods is to let them pick! Watch cooking shows, take them to the grocery store, flip through cookbooks and let them choose things that look interesting or yummy to them. Then do some research together to figure out the best way to use the ingredients.

Another option is to pick one thing and try it multiple ways. Say you’re going to try broccoli – make some roasted, some steamed, some sauteed, and some raw with dip and let them try all of them and rate their favorites!

Foods To Expand Your Palate

If the bigger list seems overwhelming and you’re specifically looking to expose a kiddo to a certain type of food to broaden their horizons, here are some categories you could start with:

new vegetables to try - pumpkin, romaine lettuce, butternut squash, snap peas, red peppers

10 New Vegetables To Try

If you’re looking to start with vegetables, here are 10 new vegetables to try. These extend beyond what seem to be the typical first veggies for kids- carrots, corn, sweet potato, peas, etc.

Romaine Lettuce

  • A good source of Vitamin A and Vitamin K and it’s super crunchy.
  • For a lot of kids, romaine can be a good gateway lettuce into salads.
  • Cut into larger chunks and encourage them to pick them up with their fingers and dip in salad dressing!

Snap Peas

  • Provide some Vitamin C and fiber.
  • These can be fun for kids to explore. Have them crunch into them whole, or peel them open, count the peas inside, taste the peas etc!

Butternut Squash

Red Bell Peppers

Pumpkin

Vegetables you should try: Jicama, Cabbage, Cauliflower,
Broccoli, Mushrooms

Cabbage

Jicama

  • Great source of vitamin C and high in fiber.
  • High in inulin which is a prebiotic fiber that can be used by the healthy bacteria in your gut!
  • Here’s a little more about it and some jicama recipe ideas.
  • An easy way to try it is to peel and cut into sticks and use them for scooping up your favorite dip, guacamole, hummus etc!
  • Or try Jicama Fries in the oven or air fryer.

Cauliflower

Mushrooms

  • Technically a fungus but is often considered a vegetable. Good source of Vitamin D and potassium!
  • If your kids have tried them cooked and don’t love them, slice them up and let them try them raw.
  • They mix well into pasta, especially if you chop them up small. Try this One Pot Creamy Mushroom Orzo or this Vegan Cream of Mushroom Pasta.
  • Chop them up finely and mix with ground beef or turkey next time you’re making taco meat or mix some in next time you make burgers!
  • Saute in butter with a little garlic powder and salt as a side dish for chicken or steak.

Broccoli

  • High in fiber, Vitamin C, Vitamin K, iron and potassium.
  • Let the kids cut apart the tiny trees and sprinkle water on the trees before eating them.
  • Serve raw with dip or steamed with cheese sauce for dipping.
  • Grate into “broccoli sprinkles” and add to pizza.
  • Roast it to make this Easy Crispy Broccoli.
  • Try this Broccoli Cauliflower Cheese Soup.
  • Add to Pizza Rolls.
  • Try broccoli slaw instead of regular broccoli. Add it to noodle-based dishes like this Instant Pot Peanut Noodles.

10 new fruits to try - including mango, plantains, cantaloupe, kiwi, fresh cherries

11 New Fruits To Try

A lot of kids start with fruits like strawberries, blueberries, grapes, bananas, peaches and pears but there are so many other great fruit options out there that provide important nutrients and taste great as well!

Mango

  • A good source of Vitamin C and contains Vitamin A and folate. They’re also a good source of both soluble and unsoluble fiber.
  • A fun kitchen activity for kids is learning how to cut a mango. Cut some up and eat it plain or try it in some mango salsa!
  • Learn how to select a ripe mango and make some Mango Chia Jam.
  • If they don’t like fresh mango, try dried mango strips.
  • Need more ideas? Here are 50 Healthy Mango Recipes for Kids

Plantains

air fryer buffalo chicken wings with celery and blue cheese

Hi friends!

I’ve got a super easy recipe to share with you guys today. My husband has always been a fan of buffalo wings and recently he has gotten all 3 of my kids interested in eating them as well!

So instead of just ordering them in restaurants, I’ve set about learning how to make them at home so I can make them for dinner a few times a month. After a few tries, I’ve decided the air fryer is my favorite way to make them.

Just season, cook in the air fryer at 400 degrees, and toss in sauce. Serve with celery and blue cheese or ranch dressing for dipping.

Why Use An Air Fryer For Buffalo Wings

The air fryer is the perfect way to get the wings to crisp up and cook quickly. Once they’re cooked, you can toss them in any flavor of buffalo sauce, or whatever other sauce you prefer. These wings take less than 5 minutes to prep and are ready in less than 20 minutes in the air fryer.

I use store-bought Franks Red Hot Buffalo Wings sauce but if you want to make your own you could try this recipe for Homemade Buffalo Sauce or this Easy Homemade Buffalo Sauce.

Crispy Air Fryer Wings – Minimal Oil Required

The best part is, the air fryer can make the wings juicy and crispy, without having to fry them in oil. The key is to use baking powder. Tossing them in just 2 teaspoons of oil along with some spices and baking powder helps them crisp up in the air fryer.

Air fryer wings marinade

While all I’ve done so far is toss mine in buffalo sauce, you could also easily marinate your wings and then cook them in the air fryer. Here’s the Best Chicken Wing Marinade Recipe that you could try. Or try these Marinated Chicken Wings.

Air Fryer Chicken Wings Flavor Ideas

Not into buffalo sauce? Try one of these:

  • Garlic parmesan
  • Honey BBQ
  • Teriyaki
  • Honey Mustard
  • Sweet Chili

Air fryer vs fried wings

Traditional buffalo wings that you’ll get at a restaurant will be deep fried and then tossed in buffalo sauce. In some cases, especially if you get boneless wings, they will be breaded and then deep fried. The air fryer is a method for cooking bone-in chicken wings without needed to deep fry them, making this method a healthier alternative.

Air Fryer Buffalo Chicken Wings Ingredients

To make air fryer buffalo chicken wings you just need to grab a few ingredients:

  • Split chicken wings
  • Neutral oil – I use avocado oil
  • Salt and garlic powder – or other seasonings
  • Baking powder – to help crisp up the skin
  • Butter – unsalted
  • Frank’s red hot buffalo wing sauce – or sauce of your choice

How To Make Chicken Wings in the Air Fryer

With just a few simple steps, your wings will be ready to eat:

  • Pat the wings dry.
  • Place wings in a bowl, drizzle with oil and toss to coat.
  • Sprinkle with seasonings and toss again.
  • Add baking powder and toss lightly.
  • Place wings in a single layer in the air fryer, leaving space between them. Make in multiple batches if needed.
  • Cook at 400 degrees for about 18 minutes, flipping half way through.
  • Toss in sauce and enjoy!

Air Fryer Buffalo Chicken Wings FAQs

How long do you cook chicken wings in an air fryer?

I have a Ninja Air Fryer (aff link) with two drawers, so I can do a 2 pound batch of wings in 18 minutes, but if you have a smaller air fryer, you’ll likely need to do 2-3 batches so they have enough space and each batch will take 18-20 minutes.

Can you air fry frozen chicken wings?

Yes. You can use frozen chicken wings and follow the directions in the recipe.

What temperature should you air fry buffalo wings?

I’ve found the best temperature to be 400 degrees Fahrenheit in the air fryer.

Do I need to flip wings halfway through air frying?

Yes! You’ll need to open the air fryer halfway through and flip the wings over so they crisp up nicely on all sides.

air fryer buffalo chicken wings crispy

How do I make wings crispy in the air fryer?

Adding a teaspoon of baking powder helps the chicken wings get crispy in the air fryer! Don’t use baking soda. It will not have the same affect.

Can I use store-bought buffalo sauce in the air fryer?

Yes you can use store-bought sauce but you don’t need to put it on the wings until after they come out of the air fryer and are done cooking! Alternatively, if you’re using a marinade, you’ll want to put it on first and let the wings sit to absorb the flavor before cooking in the air fryer.

Are air fryer buffalo chicken wings good for meal prep? Can I reheat buffalo wings in the air fryer?

Yes! Wings are a great option to make ahead of time. You can reheat them in the mcirowave or use the air fryer to reheat them. Just pop them in at 400 degrees for 5 minutes or so.

How many wings fit in a standard air fryer?

Depending on the size, you should be able to fit about a pound of wings in a 5-6 quart air fryer.

Are air fryer buffalo chicken wings gluten-free?

This recipe for buffalo chicken wings is gluten-free. If needed, just make sure the buffalo sauce or any other sauce you’re using is gluten-free if needed.

Why aren’t my air fryer buffalo chicken wings crispy?

If you don’t pat the wings dry before adding the oil and spices, or if you don’t use the baking powder, the wings may not get as crispy as they usually would.

This air fryer chicken wings recipe is quick, easy and flavorful. They're perfect for a weeknight dinner or a party appetizer and can be tossed in any sauce you like!

Hi friends!

I’ve got another delicious recipe to share with you guys today: Steak Kabobs with Potatoes. They’re simple enough for a weeknight family dinner but fancy enough for a party or BBQ. Added bonus- they are easy to prep ahead so they’re grill-ready when you are!

I love these grilled steak and potato kabobs because they are easy and super versatile. An easy marinade of oil, vinegar, soy sauce, honey, Worcestershire sauce garlic and onion adds flavor to the meat and veggies and you can choose your favorite veggies to customize the meal to your liking.

Shish kabobs with potatoes

Can you put potatoes on kabobs?

Yes! I think a lot of people overlook potatoes as a vegetable option for kabobs because they take longer to cook than other vegetables but with one simple trick, you can definitely include potatoes in your next kabobs.

How to prep potatoes for kabobs

The trick for potatoes is cooking the potatoes in the microwave before assembling the kabobs so that everything cooks evenly on the grill in just 10 minutes!

You can prep the potatoes earlier in the day or just before you’re ready to assemble the kabobs.

How long to boil potatoes for kabobs

If you’re not excited about using the microwave, you can also boil the potatoes before putting them on the skewers. The boiling time will depend on the size of the potatoes but typically about 3-5 minutes for smaller potatoes and anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes for larger potatoes. You want them to be soft enough that you can easily push the skewer through the potato but not so soft they fall apart on the grill.

Microwaving or parboiling the potatoes before grilling will help you get crispy grilled potatoes on kabobs – crispy on the outside and soft on the inside!

Best type of potatoes for kabobs

You can use naturally small potatoes like those from the Little Potato Company or choose larger yellow or red potatoes and cut them into chunks. I wouldn’t recommend russet potatoes.

Grilled Steak and Potatoes Kabobs

These grilled steak and potato kabobs are perfect for getting your kids in the kitchen with you! My kids had fun piercing holes in the potatoes before microwaving and threading everything onto the skewers. My oldest also helped me chop the veggies – zucchini is especially good for younger kids to practice cutting – and mix the ingredients for the marinade.

If you microwave the potatoes ahead of time and let them cool, the kids can also help you assemble the skewers. For more kids in the kitchen tips check out my Ultimate Guide to Teaching Kids To Cook!

What To Serve with Steak and Potato Kabobs

These kabobs pair perfectly with salad of any kind! Try:

Or just serve up a bed of lettuce and use the kabobs as your salad toppings!

1/2 small onion, diced
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 red bell pepper
1 small zucchini
16 baby red or yellow potatoes
3 slices thick cut bacon, cut in half

  1. Cut steaks into 10-12 large chunks. (Try to make them similar sizes so they’ll cook evenly)
  2. Cut the pepper and zucchini into chunks as well.
  3. Combine steak and vegetables in a large resealable bag.
  4. In a small bowl, combine oil, vinegar, soy sauce, honey, Worcestershire, garlic and onion and stir to combine.
  5. Pour marinade into bag, shake well and refrigerate overnight.
  6. Pierce potatoes with a knife or fork, place in a microwave-safe bowl and toss with a little oil.
  7. Microwave 3-4 minutes or until potatoes pierce easily with a knife. Let cool at least 10 minutes.
  8. Discard marinade.
  9. Thread skewers with steak, peppers, zucchini, bacon and potatoes.
  10. Grill over medium heat for 8-10 minutes, flipping once.

So easy, right?? Here’s a temperature guide to follow depending how you like your steak cooked.

Grilled Steak and Potato Kabobs FAQs

Do you need to precook potatoes for kabobs? Can I use raw potatoes on kabobs?

Yes you need to precook the potatoes in some way before using them on kabobs. Potatoes take a much longer time to cook than steak and other vegetables so if you don’t cook them ahead of time, they will still be hard and only partially cooked when everything else is done. It will also be very hard to get skewers through raw potatoes.

Can I bake steak and potato kabobs in the oven?

Yes! You can easily prepare these grilled steak and potato kabobs in the oven. Try baking at 400 degrees F for 10 minutes or so. You can also separate your kabobs and do some all steak and some all veggies so that you can bake them for different amounts of time if you’re worried about overcooking the steak in the oven.

What marinades work best for steak and potato kabobs?

I like the one in this grilled steak and potato kabobs recipe 🙂 But if you want other ideas check out Steak Kabobs with Potatoes or these Steak and Potato Skewers with Chimichurri.

Can you make vegetarian kabobs with just veggies and potatoes?

Yes! Feel free to leave out the steak in this recipe! Or even sub it for another protein like chicken or shrimp.

Are steak and potato kabobs good for meal prep? How do you store kabobs?

Yes! These can easily be made ahead of time. Once they’re cooked, remove from the skewers and store the steak and veggie mixture in a glass tupperware container.

Can you reheat steak and potato kabobs?

Yes. You can eat the leftovers cold or reheat in the microwave or air fryer.

How do I keep potatoes from falling off skewers on the grill?

The trick is to cook the potatoes just long enough that you can thread them on the skewers. If you overcook them, they will be too crumbly on the inside and will fall apart on the grill.

These Grilled Steak and Potato Kabobs are perfect for a healthy weeknight dinner or your next summer BBQ. A simple marinade adds flavor to the steak and veggies and the potatoes are pre-cooked in the microwave to make grilling quick and easy!

Hi friends!

Let’s talk about these chicken burgers with avocado shall we? While my husband and daughter could eat them multiple times a week, I’m not a huge fan of traditional beef burgers.

But these chicken burgers are an option I can get behind! They are perfect for a quick summer dinner and also great for food prep because they hold up well if made ahead of time and the flavors develop more, making them even more delicious!

Ground chicken is a great source of lean protein with a mild flavor, making it a great choice for things like burgers and meatballs. It holds things together but really lets the other flavors shine. These burgers are a great high protein, low carb option.

Health Benefits of Avocado

One of the key ingredients to these burgers is avocado. There are tons of health benefits of avocado and they are often added as a burger topping but this recipe takes things up a notch and actually mixes them right into the burger itself!

This helps keep the burgers moist, adds some healthy fats which can boost satiety as well as adding some vitamins and nutrients that other burgers lack.

For other ways to add avocado to your recipes, try: Cowboy Caviar, Avocado Cucumber Salsa with Pineapple or Spicy Shrimp Tacos with Avocado Slaw.

Ingredients for Avocado Chicken Burgers

For these burgers, you just need a few simple ingredients:

  • Ground chicken – You could substitute ground turkey if needed
  • Avocado – you’ll want one that’s slightly firm so it’ll hold its shape when diced
  • Fresh ginger- either grated fresh ginger or ginger paste works well too
  • Cilantro- adds tons of flavor
  • Green onions – A mild onion flavor that pairs well with the other ingredients
  • Serrano pepper – or jalapeno, optional to add spice!
  • All-purpose seasoning – use your favorite blend. I like McCormick’s chicken seasoning

Can I grill these avocado chicken burgers instead of baking?

Absolutely. As long as you don’t cut your avocado chunks too big, these burgers are sturdy and hold up great on the grill!

Can I freeze avocado chicken burgers after cooking?

While most burgers freeze well, this probably isn’t the best recipe to freeze because the avocado may start to brown and look less appetizing.
